Concrete offers an attractive, durable finish that never needs painting. And the base itself has no bolts requiring periodic tightening, because the large footprint enables the stave assembly to sit securely on foundation dowels without bolts.
This lower mass, wide-load distribution footprint also makes the simple ring foundation less sensitive to settlement issues.
